We spoke with Daniel Mushtaba Majeed, son of owner, Abdul Majeed. Who explained the business began on a different premises under the name Kohinoor but as they continued to grow, Majeed’s father moved to the current premises in 1987, where he opened Shalamar Tandoori. He ran the restaurant until around 2006 when he decided it was time for a complete revamp and modernisation and the Aroma Asian Restaurant was born!
Despite the changes and different names over the decades, one thing has remained constant – the customers.
Majeed explained: “We’ve got a lot of repeat [customers]. I’d say about 90 percent of our customers are our regulars.”
Those regular customers have become an important part of the restaurant’s story. Majeed says his father has watched generations of the same families grow up visiting the restaurant
“My dad always says that he’s seen four generations of the same family,” further explaining that his father will repeat with joy, that “They’ve probably grew up by my curry.”
A remarkable reflection of the relationship the restaurant has built with the local community.
That connection to the community is something Aroma values.
“Honestly, the support we have within the community over so many years, it’s been amazing.”
For Majeed that support is something his father never takes for granted, explaining:
“My dad always maintains without the customers that we’ve got, and without their love and support, we probably wouldn’t be here today.”
Majeed sees himself as part of the upcoming generation, but is keen to acknowledge that the journey belongs to his father, who has spent decades building relationships with customers and establishing the family business.
Proudly explaining that his father has built up a legacy of flavour, passion, hard work and determination and he is proud to help the restaurant grow further in the future.
Abdul Majeed has been selected as a Regional Curry Ambassador for Burnley, Lancashire.
“He’s honored, hes very humbled by it. He doesn’t want to stop – he wants to keep working hard.”
Regional curry ambassadors have been selected throughout the UK. They act as a champion for local curry restaurants, sharing their area’s unique food culture, and helping to shape the future standards and reputation of The Curry Scene in the UK.
